Research and other interesting things
As a tropical ecologist I am interested in sustainable crop production – and ultimately in questions such as where and how we can produce the food to feed the soon-to-be 9 billion people. I use field experiments and analytical methods to understand the role of common species in biocontrol. In a literature review I investigated the effect of commonly applied pesticides on human health, biodiversity and the environment. Together with a team of collaborators, I built and now analyse large databases to determine the ecosystem services that mammals and amphibians provide at various spatial scales. Research allows me to be creative, do interesting projects all over the world – mostly in Asia but also in Africa, Australia, North America, and Europe – and work together with great people.
I am also very interested in entrepreneurship. Behind the scenes of all these products around us is so much going on to take an idea to product development, shipping, testing, talking to customers until it finally is what it is .. and changes again. There are amazing opportunities out there to develop new or improve old products to make a difference. I end up spending a lot of my spare time toying with and testing ideas.
If I am not doing one or the other, I go outdoors for climbing, hiking, running, swimming, or biking. And while this is just one sentence here, it does add soooo much pleasure and in fact new ideas to my life! Often I come back with a ton of pictures and do things to them in Adobe Photoshop. I recently re-discovered blender, a 3D modelling and animation program which is great to get ideas out of the brain and into something 3D ;).
